Gamelan Raga Kusuma is a community gamelan based in Richmond Virginia. Directed by Professor Andrew McGraw of the University of Richmond Department of Music, and co-founded with I Gusti Sudarta, Balinese dalang and master teacher of Institut Seni Indonesia, Denpasar, Bali.
Andy received his Ph.D. in ethnomusicology at Wesleyan University in 2005 and has published extensively on traditional and experimental music in Southeast Asia. As a student and performer of Indonesian musics he has studied and collaborated with the leading performers of Bali and Central Java during several years of research in Indonesia and his performances and collaborations have appeared on the New Amsterdam, Tzadik, Sargasso and Porter record labels. His book projects include: Radical Traditions: Re-imagining Culture in Balinese Contemporary Music (Oxford, 2013), Performing Indonesia (co-edited with Sumarsam, Smithsonian, 2016) and Music as Ethics (Oxford, 2023).
