    Accepting new members!

Gamelan Raga Kusuma is an open, community-based ensemble affiliated with the University of Richmond in Richmond, Virginia. We rehearse 6-8 pm Sundays and Thursdays in our studio at the lower level of North Court, 426 Westhampton Way [map]. The entry door is at the north corner of the building, directly across from the tennis courts, at the bottom of the stairs.

No prior musical training is required. Gamelan is radically different from Western music in its structure, technique, and learning methods, so we all learn by observation, repetition, and hands-on practice. Current members span ages, cultures, backgrounds, and interests. We are connected by our love of music, learning, and intercultural exploration.

Membership is free and open to the public. Study under master artists from Bali and Java. Participation does not require purchasing your own instrument or paying for expensive private lessons. If you can show up to rehearsal, there is a place for you. But gamelan is not just about music; it is a combination of sound, theater, dance and—just as important—snacks!

We play two types of gamelan, Javanese court music and Balinese temple music.

Here is an example of the Javanese court repertoire we study, performed by our frequent guest artist Peni Candra Rini: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-HaMzpAxhOU&list=PLKDaLWu1zJQfr-iekXm-k4…

Here is an example of the Balinese repertoire we study and perform: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AVLwWfGju4

Because our rehearsal schedule is subject to occasional changes (i.e. breaks after concerts, holidays, etc.) we encourage those interested in attending a rehearsal should first email Andy McGraw (amcgraw@richmond.edu) for confirmation.
